The project occupies a complex of historic and new buildings.
The entry design is a nod to the tectonics of the neighboring masonry buildings and creates a portal through the facade into the deep floor plate
A light palette of materials puts the student artwork on display in a sophisticated but welcoming manner.
The school’s main gathering space is centered around a 2-story social stair on the 9th and 10th floors.
This dynamic meeting and circulation space provides access to large roof decks on the north and south sides of the building
Large exploration-based flexible-use learning spaces form the common areas between classrooms of the lower-elementary school.
The school includes a large makerspace for the upper grades complete with fabrication shops for working with a large variety of materials and technologies.
The Whittle School and Studios
Brooklyn, NY
The Whittle School is a 500,000sf private preK-12 school currently under construction in downtown Brooklyn. Spread across 10 floors of a recently completed speculative commercial development, the project was largely a tenant fit-out but also required a large rooftop addition for the gym as well as several surgical changes to the new and historic facades.
